The Effects of Population-Based Mammography Screening
This study evaluated the effect of mammography screenings for women between ages 40 and 50 in the presence of adjuvant systemic therapy (treatment after surgical removal of cancer cells.) Throughout the study, it was found that biennial screening for women between the ages of 50 and 74 was found to reduce the mortality rate by 15.7% and that by further extending the age limit for screenings from 50 to 48, the mortality rate would lower by 1.0%. Additionally, adding 10 more rounds of screening between the ages of 40 and 49 can further reduce mortality by 5.1%.
Overall, it was found that breast cancer screening can be as effective in lower breast cancer mortality as medical therapies and that lowering the age limit for breast cancer screening can reduce breast cancer mortality.
