Minnesota Lawmakers Introduce Legislation Covering Additional Breast Cancer Screenings

On Jan 17, 2023, state Senator Alice Mann (D-Lakeville) and state Representative Patty Acomb (D-Minnetonka) introduced SF 329 and HF 390 to require insurance companies to cover additional breast cancer screening with no cost-sharing. 40% of women over 40 have dense breast tissue, which makes cancer tumors undetectable under standard mammograms. Additional testing is necessary and can cost between $234 to $1,021 out-of-pocket. Early detection of breast cancer is crucial, as it can reduce disease mortality by 25-30%. For women with dense breast tissue, additional diagnostic imaging such as MRI or ultrasound is medically necessary to detect breast cancers.
